Patellar luxation is a dislocation of the kneecap. The kneecap can dislocate towards the inside (medial), outside (lateral), or in both directions. For the most part, we see medial patellar location more commonly. This can cause discomfort when the kneecap dislocates and the intensity of the discomfort varies based on the severity and duration of the luxation. In severe cases, surgical repair is necessary. The surgical repair can include one or all of the following procedures, tibial tuberosity transposition, trochleoplasty, lateral imbrication and medial release.
