Fracture Repair

A fracture is a complete or incomplete break in any bone. These fractures are most commonly caused by trauma, but can also be caused by underlying bone disease. They may also cause a great deal of damage to the surrounding tissue. There are multiple ways to fix a fracture; it is dependent on the placement and severity of the break. Some fractures may be set with a splint, some may need an internal pin placed inside the bone, and more severe fractures may need an external apparatus to secure fragments of the bone in place. At Rockledge Animal Clinic, we primarily only perform the surgery where an intramedullary pin is placed within the bone to hold it together. If more extensive surgical repair is needed, we will recommend referral to a veterinary surgeon.
