Femoral Head Ostectomy

A femoral head ostectomy is the surgical removal of the head and neck of the femur that fits into the ball and socket joint of the hip. This surgery is performed to alleviate pain from continuous dislocation of the joint, hip dysplasia, severe arthritis, or even a fracture of the area. Referral to a veterinary surgeon for a total hip replacement is still sometimes recommended.
