Pet vaccinations are important

Just like in people, vaccines help prevent many illnesses that can affect your pet. Vaccination can be one of the easiest ways to help your pet live a long and healthy life. There are different types of vaccines for different types of diseases and some may be required by law for your pet depending on the city, county or state that you live in. Vaccines will help your pet’s immune system fight off disease-causing organisms by introducing antigens into their body. This way, if your pet is ever exposed to the real disease, their immune system is prepared to fight it off.

Common vaccines

Most of us are familiar with rabies vaccines, but there are several vaccines which are quite common for your pet to receive. Some of these are because of how common it is to be exposed to the disease and some are considered important because of the risk and severity of transmitting these diseases to people.

Common dog vaccines include:

  • Canine hepatitis
  • Canine parvovirus
  • Distemper
  • Rabies

Common cat vaccines include:

  • Feline calicivirus
  • Feline herpesvirus type 1 (rhinotracheitis)
  • Panleukopenia (feline distemper)
  • Rabies

Risks associated with vaccination

So what are some of the risks associated with vaccinations? Immunization should mildly stimulate your pet’s immune system. This will help them create protection from the specific diseases for which they have been vaccinated. You might notice some mild symptoms of the disease, soreness around the injection site or fevers and other allergic reactions. Feel free to ask one of our vets about the risks involved in vaccinating your pet.
